UVA Staff Review - Hunter Specialties' Bunsaver
By Kelly Higashiyama

One of the hardest things to do while varmint hunting is staying absolutely still. If you happen to plop down on a sharp rock, twig or the ground is wet or frozen, that’s going to make you shift or move during your calling session you may as well write that stand off. One product that I have found to be pretty invaluable is some type of cushion to sit on. Sitting on a nice soft cushion really helps a person to not worry about what is poking them in the posterior and concentrate on the stand and whatever they are trying to call into it.

I tried a few of the other pads, some were no more then a piece of foam with a length of strap attached to it. These may work fine for some applications, but I found that if you used a really firm pad on really hard, uneven ground or a rocky slope they had a way of sliding around on you. Quite a few of the more ‘robust’ pads were also quite heavy and much too bulky to pack from stand to stand.

After looking at a Bunsaver from Hunter Specialites, I bought one and started using it. One thing that really nice about the Bunsaver is the way you can adjust the firmness of the cushion. There is a small valve on the backside that allows you to get the exact amount of rigidity that you need in the cushion for that particualr stand. Too soft you say? Simply open the valve, let the pressure off the cushion and it will self-fill and then just close the valve and you are set. I have found setting it slightly ‘soft’ on those hard surfaces helps to keep the cushion where it should be, instead of moving around and forcing you to either move around to get it back in place, or having something under you that isn’t much more comfortable then the ground itself.

Another nice feature about the Bunsaver is the strap is solid on one side and the smaller portion of the strap is made of a stretchy material. It allows you to pull the cushion up high for when you are walking to and from your stand, but it will allow you to also push the cushion down a few inches so its in the right place when you sit down without having to unhook the cushion and loosen the carrying strap by hand. This is one area of concern though, the stretchy material doesn’t look to be super strong, and in the two years that I’ve used mine it’s the only thing on the entire unit to show any real wear and tear.

Bunsavers come in two different types of camouflage prints on the outside, Realtree Hardwoods Green and Advantage Timber. The inside is usually dark green or brown in color. The material covering the air cushion itself is quite strong and puncture resistant.

Overall the Bunsaver from Hunters Specialties is one heck of a fine product. The price usually runs about $15 to $20 and its money well spent.

 ***UPDATE***

Still using the same Bunsaver after 5 years. It has seen a lot of hard use and is still holding up well. Giving the Durability another howl, bringing it up to four howls.
