UVA Staff Review - CTK All Purpose Gun
Level |

I had a chance to take a look at another tool from the guys over at CTK precision. The General Purpose Gun Level. The tool itself and its usage is very simple. You place the level onto the top of your rifle, get the bubble in the middle and use something that's perfectly vertical to check your scope cant. Simple enough. Ok, onto the testing and review! The General Purpose Gun Level is a very simple tool. A bar of anodized aluminum with a bubble type level in one end and the other half of the tool is flat and has a rubber attachment cord to hold it onto the rifle. Simple enough. For the most part I used the General Purpose Gun Level(GPGL) along with another product from CTK Precision, the P3 Ultimate Gun Vise. Sometimes things work together like peas and carrots and these two tools are right along the same lines. I already have another scope cant/leveling tool and I thought it had been working great in the past. Boy was I in for a shock. The first rifle up for testing was one of my Prairie Dogging rifles, a Savage 12FV. This rifle gets quite a bit of use over the first part of the season and its a great shooter, but I was having problems with shots that seemed to go a little out into orbit once I got out over 450-500+ yards. I clamped the rifle into the vise and hung a thick piece of butchers string with a weight attached to the end to use a a vertical guide. First I attached my other scope alignment tool and checked the scope alignment. It showed as far as I could tell that the scope was not canted. I removed that tool and carefully attached the GPGL to the rifle, and brought the rifle completely level. I looked through the scope and low and behold.... CANT! It was only a couple of degrees, but it would totally explain the errant shots it had been giving me at longer ranges. I went through the rest of my scoped rifles and checked them. A couple more showed a little bit of cant using the CTK tool, while the old tool showed that they were in alignment. A friend brought over one a scoped pistol and we checked the cant on his scope, his checked out just fine, but using it with the P3 gun Vise, it was just as easy to use it with a pistol as it was for a rifle. Here is another use that I found very handy with the GPGL. Checking how level I held a rifle. All the leveling in the world isn't going to help much if you hold the rifle canted when you shoot freehanded. I attached the GPGL to one of my walking rifles and did some practice bringing the gun up to my shoulder and seeing how level I held. The window the bubble tube rests in has enough of a cutaway on the sides to allow you to see the bubble from the side as well as the top. It showed me that sometimes I wasn't holding the rifle as level as I should. All in all, the GPGL is a great tool, one with a million uses to help us get better accuracy from our rifles and pistols. Another 5 howl review! Great product guys!
